One way of thinking of globalization is that it is a version of modernity free from the framework of the nation-states system.

This means that modernity's imperative towards 'total mobilization' is not orientated to the national war-machine (a tendency, post mid 20th Century, offset by internationalization), but rather towards an increasingly tangled globalized association of diverse political-economic and social-cultural means.

However, one might also think of globalization as leading to a historical epoch that is very different to and discontinuous from modernity.
